Recover Overwritten Files
By default, SyncToy never deletes or overwrites any files. Instead, it moves the
files to the system Recycle Bin. Should you need to do so, you can recover
these files from the Recycle Bin and copy them wherever you like.
-
To recover a file from the Recycle Bin you first need to open it. On many
computers there will be an icon on the desktop for the Recycle Bin, typically
near the upper left corner of your screen. If you do not have a Recycle Bin
icon you can open the Recycle Bin through the "start" button. You can do that
by:
-
Select the start
button.
-
Position the mouse cursor on the My Computer
option and press the right mouse button.
-
Select the Explore
option from the context menu.
-
Select the Recycle Bin icon in the left navigation pane.
.
-
Once you have opened the Recycle Bin, you can right-click on any of the files
and select Restore
. This option will restore the file to the folder it originally came from.
-
Alternatively, you can copy any of the files in the Recycle Bin to a location
of your choice by dragging-and-dropping them to another Explorer window.
Note that you can change SyncToy's default behavior by changing the setting for
"Save overwritten files in the Recycle Bin" on the SyncToy options
screen. Turning this option off will cause SyncToy to delete these files
permanently rather than storing them in the Recycle Bin. Turning this option
off causes SyncToy to use less disk space, but it makes it impossible to
recover any overwritten or deleted files that you might want in the future.
